Thought for the week

Thought for the week: Sunday 19th April 2020
This thought was written by Graham Thomas, who would have been leading our service today, if we were not in lockdown.

Think of all the things this week that have made you angry, despondent, sad, hopeless. Take a couple of minutes. Now take a few deep breaths, quieten your mind, read the Psalm 16.

My choice is you, God, first and only.
And now I find I’m your choice!
(Psalm 16 v5, The Message)

Realise that God loves us first and foremost

Hymn: “Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart” (Van Morrison fans click here!)

Attributed to the Sixth century Irish poet St Dallán Forgaill who was also known for his “Elegy of Saint Columba”. Dallán means “little blind one”, he lost his sight reputedly by studying intensively.

Reading 1 Peter 1:3-9

I was watching the film “Bumblebee”, one of the Transformer series. Alien battle robots  “Autobots” have been exiled from their planet by their enemies the “Decepticons”. B-127 is sent to Earth as a scout to prepare a place for other survivors of the war to go. It transforms to a beat up old Volkswagen Beetle . A teenage girl finds it in a junk yard and in trying to make it road worthy, discovers its secret, she call it Bumblebee.  Right at the end of the film, there is a touching “goodbye” scene. The girl has to get on with her life and Bumblebee has to save the universe. It then transforms in to a really flash, ultra modern, sports coupe. The girl is incredulous, that all the time it was capable of such a wonderful transformation.

Peter writes in his first letter about the transformation that we have in Christ:

“we’ve been given a brand-new life and have everything to live for, including a future in heaven—and the future starts now!”  (1 Peter 1:4 The Message).

There is much about this present crisis that makes us proud in our communities, resilience, compassion, good neighbours, a sense of common purpose. Yet Jesus, by His resurrection, offers complete transformation, to be part of a God’s Kingdom, on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Lasers are powerful pieces of equipment for transforming light, they have the power to fire a beam into space, or cut metal, or precisely destroy damaged tissue in the brain. It's just light, but amplified in a “coherent” form. It has the same frequency, the same waveform. This is like the transformation of the resurrection, we are in phase with God. It is in that coherent trust, that we are able to be Jesus to all the people we meet. In your prayers, in your actions and in all of your life be transformed into what God has always wanted you to be.

Father I put my trust in You and I understand that the road is not easy. My faith is more precious than gold, so I choose to hold on to that and I choose to hold on to You, Amen.
